Psalm 8
This beautiful Psalm is for all of us.
It is a great Psalm for people who love God.
It is a vibrant Psalm for people who enjoy worship.
It is an encouraging Psalm, for children of all ages - to Praise God.
It is a significant Psalm for people who love to see, Old Testament prophecy, fulfilled in the New Testament.
It is a visual Psalm for people who love creation, nature and animals.
It is an awesome Psalm for people who think about science.
And it is a skilfully woven Psalm for people who love doing crafts.
Throughout this Psalm we see the handiwork of God: the work of his fingers.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honour.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Psalm 8 (NIV)
This Psalm begins and ends with the same words.
We are reminded that God is Lord.
We are reminded that his name is majestic.
And at this time of the pandemic - when we are constantly being reminded, in the media, of a disease that is everywhere: we are reminded that God’s name is everywhere too - majestic in all the earth!
Let’s remember the 2nd word of the first and last verse too.
It is true that we must all invite Jesus, personally, to be Lord of our lives, as individuals.
But we must also make him “Our Lord” as a community of believers too.
At a time like this - we need each other.
Let us repent, if we ever pretend that we are better than anyone else.
Let us repent, if we ever imagine that we can go it alone.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
