Restore to me the joy of your salvation

What's this message about?
In Psalm 51 King David wrote:
"Restore to me the joy of your salvation - then I will teach transgressors your ways."
But, before that, he writes:
"Against you, you only, have I sinned."
How can we apply David's Psalm, in our own situation?
